Helping households towards sustainability

The Household Sustainability Programme is making it easier for Kiwis to improve their lifestyles, save money, keep New Zealand’s environment healthy, clean and green, and respond to climate change.
The $6 million programme helps New Zealanders identify practical steps to cut their electricity and petrol bills, make their homes warmer, healthier and cheaper to run, and cut back on their water use and waste.
The programme engages directly with the public through a sustainability website, home shows and other community events. It works closely with central government departments and is building partnerships with local government and community groups.
The sustainability.govt.nz website has been developed to provide New Zealand families with information and advice on the small, medium, and big steps they can take to live more sustainably. The ‘Next Step’ plan encourages people to register the sustainability steps they are already taking and the steps they will take next. The website also features discussion forums, case studies, blogs and news and events.
